Schwelm is a town in the district of Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is the smallest municipality in terms of area. The town is located at the edge of the Ruhr area, bordering the Bergisches Land. Schwelm is also known as the “Gate to Westphalia”, since its western and southern borders are also the border between Rhineland and Westphalia. The cities Düsseldorf, Cologne and Dortmund are roughly 38 miles away from the town, and Frankfurt is 190 miles away.

The Wuppertal-Langerfeld/Schwelm interchange is located in the far west side of the town, through which you can get onto the autobahn A1. The highway junction Wuppertal-Nord is located in the Northwest, offering access to the A1, A43 and A46. The highway B7 runs from east to west, connecting Schwelm to Greater Wuppertal and Sauerland. The B7 and the B483 cross each other at the Talstrasse/Hattinger Strasse/Bahnhofstrasse junction, and you can drive to Hattingen and Radevormwald from there.
